Since its foundation over one hundred years ago in 1907, countless works of art pave passed through the Tokyo Art Club. Its role becomes clear when one traces the history of many outstanding works of art in Japanese museum collections. Through a variety of auctions and sales, these works have passed from private collections to those of museums. We now live in a wonderful time when anyone can appreciate beauty in these public spaces, and the Tokyo Art Club has been quietly facilitating the process all along.
The Tokyo National Museum houses a number of important cultural properties that bring Japan’s long history to life. Borrowing works with deep connections to the Tokyo Art Club, in this exhibition we tell the story of their journey before entering the collection of the Tokyo National Museum. Here we can appreciate the historical background of each piece as they have changed hands and been carefully passed down over the ages, each with its own dramatic tale.
