Despite the name “Heisei,” there have been various events that can be considered tumultuous in the last 30 years. As we are in the process of entering a new era, our art industry is also facing a variety of challenges and difficulties. Although it is said that economic conditions have been favorable for a long time, the market is, in fact, still unable to overcome economic instability.
We seem to be far away from the vision that political, economic, and cultural entities function together and advance the state and society as a trinity. Since we have to deal with various global-level factors, it is not that easy to attain the ideal. However, we truly hope that Japanese cultural policy will become something valuable to encourage and entertain both artists and art enthusiasts just like that of Western Europe and Southeast Asia. As the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games are closely approaching, there seem to be so many things to do.
We assume that each artist experiences today’s difficult situations, but the path of creation goes forever on. In order to create art, it is essential to explore new selves beyond the limits and keep advancing in a new world without being satisfied with a small success. If the society becomes leveled and makes us feel uneasy by not adapting to the system, it would be a truly unfortunate period for artists.
Inheriting a long history since the Goto exhibition, we are about to celebrate the “Creation” exhibition this year again. As many legends who had been enriching the Showa and Heisei periods have already passed away, the art industry currently seems to be a little cheerless. Nevertheless, many emerging artists, who will be participating into the exhibition, consider this a great opportunity. They have been making efforts to advance into the broader world without being afraid. Their challenges and adventures are gradually but surely coming to fruition.
We strongly hope that our guests will encounter the amazing artworks which strongly touch chords. We would love to have you at our “Creation 2019” exhibition by all means.
